TANDEM partnership will promote intergenerational and intercultural communication to enhance VET competences

Friday, 16 April 2010

TANDEM - How to establish intergenerational and intercultural communication and how to provide for transfer and transparency of competences in VET

In many European countries, two groups of society are among the most affected by low participation in labour market and social exclusion: young low-level educated and older migrant people. Both groups are also hard to reach by educational measures and often show low motivation and poor course success.

“TANDEM - How to establish intergenerational and intercultural communication and how to provide for transfer and transparency of competences in VET” is based upon the successful Grundtvig project “European Generation Link” (www.european-generation-link.org) and shall adapt innovative and concrete measures for VET, demonstrating to VET teachers, trainers and counsellors how to bring these two groups of society together and make them benefit from each other.

The project is thus based upon the concept of intergenerational and intercultural learning. It will show to VET teachers how to support learners making non-formal and informal skills transparent and valid for their future professional development based on the EUROPASS approach.

The partnership of the proposed project TANDEM consists of VET providers and innovation experts representing the original project from Austria, Germany and Belgium cooperating with VET providers, consulting and research organisations, public bodies from Norway, Netherlands, Greece and Bulgaria.

The main outputs of TANDEM will help to raise competences of VET providers and their staff and be as follows:

1. TANDEM didactic guidelines -to show how to sensitise the young adults and motivate them to form tandem teams with older migrants, carry out interviews, engage in knowledge transfer and make competences transparent

2. TANDEM internet-based library - with “stories” of older migrants recorded by young adults to be searched by diverse parameters

3. TANDEM library user handbook - to inform users about organisational aspects of how to use the library, produce, edit and upload recordings in various formats onto it.

And the TANDEM Implementation Concept for each target country which can help to foster the sustainability of the TANDEM results.
